BUILDERSTEPS INC. ("Buildersteps," "we," "us," or "our") respects your privacy and is committed to protecting the information you share with us. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard information when you access or use the Buildersteps construction management software application and related services (collectively, the "Platform").
By accessing or using the Platform, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this Privacy Policy.
2. Our Role as a Service Provider
Buildersteps provides software to general contracting businesses ("General Contractors") to manage their projects, clients, and subcontractors. Most of the information entered into the Platform—including project details, customer contact information, invoices, contracts, and compliance documents ("Project Records")—is controlled by the General Contractor that invited you to the Platform.
With respect to Project Records, the General Contractor is the data controller (or business), and BUILDERSTEPS INC. acts as a service provider (or data processor), processing that information on the General Contractor's behalf.
3. Information We Collect
We collect information in the following ways when you or a business administrator use the Platform:
- Account and Contact Information: Your name, email address, phone number, company name, and user role, which may be provided by you or by the business administrator who created your account.
- Project, Billing, and Compliance Records: Information and files uploaded or generated during the course of a project, including proposals, change orders, invoices, contracts, payment records, tax forms, licenses, and insurance documentation.
- Payment Information: When payments or payouts are processed through the Platform, financial and payment details are collected and processed by our third-party payment processors. Buildersteps does not directly store full credit card numbers or bank account credentials on its servers.
- Electronic Signature and Usage Data: When you access the Platform or execute a document electronically, we automatically collect certain technical information, such as your IP address, browser type, device information, access times, and timestamps to maintain security and verify electronic signatures.
4. How We Use Information
We use the information we collect solely to provide, maintain, and secure the Platform, including to:
- Authenticate your identity and provide access to your account and authorized projects;
- Facilitate the creation, delivery, and electronic signing of proposals, change orders, invoices, and contracts;
- Process project payments and contractor payouts;
- Maintain audit trails for electronic signatures, billing, and compliance records;
- Communicate with you regarding your account, system updates, security alerts, and administrative notices;
- Monitor, protect, and improve the security, performance, and functionality of the Platform; and
- Comply with applicable legal, tax, and regulatory obligations.
5. How We Share Information
We do not sell your personal information to third parties. We only share information in the following circumstances:
- Within the Applicable Project or Business: Information you submit is shared with the General Contractor and other authorized users assigned to the relevant project or business, in accordance with the access permissions set by that business.
- Service Providers: We share information with trusted third-party vendors who assist us in operating the Platform, such as cloud hosting providers, authentication services, email delivery services, and payment processors. These providers are authorized to use your information only as necessary to perform services for us.
- Legal Compliance and Protection: We may disclose information if required to do so by law, subpoena, or legal process, or if we believe in good faith that disclosure is necessary to protect the rights, property, or safety of BUILDERSTEPS INC., our users, or others.
- Business Transfers: In connection with any merger, sale of company assets, financing, or acquisition of all or a portion of our business, user information may be transferred as part of the transaction.
6. Data Retention
We retain your account information and Project Records for as long as the applicable business account remains active or as needed to provide the Platform. Even if your individual account is deactivated, historical Project Records—including signed agreements, invoices, payment histories, tax forms, and compliance files—are retained on behalf of the General Contractor to satisfy legal, tax, accounting, and operational requirements.
7. Data Security
We implement reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards designed to protect the information stored on the Platform against unauthorized access, loss, misuse, or alteration. However, no internet transmission or electronic storage method is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. You are responsible for keeping your account sign-in credentials confidential.
8. Your Choices and Access Requests
Because Buildersteps processes Project Records on behalf of the General Contractor managing the project, requests to access, update, correct, or delete your personal information or project files should be directed to the administrator of the business that invited you to the Platform. You may also contact us regarding information we control directly.
9. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The "Effective Date" at the top of this page indicates when this Privacy Policy was last revised. Your continued use of the Platform after any update takes effect constitutes your acknowledgment of the revised Privacy Policy.
